The UK used to have a sustainable system of agriculture - the 3 or 4 course rotation of crops - wheat, roots, grazing. This built the fertility of the soil. This system is now abandoned, as is any real attempt to feed ourselves - we import most of our food.

Surrey does not produce much food.

  • There are a few market gardens south of Guildford
  • Maybe there are 5,000 allotments in Surrey
  • A small number of gardeners produce an appreciable quantity of fruit and vegetables (5% of gardeners grow 10% of their own annual consumption, so producing 0.5% of Surrey's total food consumed)
  • I am told that there are more horses than livestock in Surrey
  • Also, more people work on golf courses than in the agricultural sector

I think it is fair to estimate that Surrey produces about 1% of the food consumed in the county. This situation may not be sustainable.
