Surrey has gigantic problems with sustainability, however, some small steps are being taken in the right direction:-

  1. waste recycling schemes are being set up, giving an 18% rate of recycling for Surrey households (source)
  2. new agencies have been set up to encourage recycling. These may be laying foundations for the future
  3. small-scale community composting projects are being supported
  4. some charcoal-making has resumed, which both saves tropical trees, and makes a rational use of our own woods
  5. some harvesting of bean-sticks has resumed, replacing imported bamboo sticks
  6. some businesses are switching to LPG and electric vehicles
  7. the local plan attempts to take action to meet many useful targets
  8. the Beddington eco-village may be showing what is possible in future
  9. Bioregional has the goal of local sustainability in Surrey

These and other efforts show some signs of 'joined up thinking' in Surrey
